About Historically Black Colleges
Historically Black Colleges is a digital home dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and elevating the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—institutions that have shaped generations of leaders, innovators, artists, and changemakers. Our mission is simple but powerful: to honor the past, illuminate the present, and empower the future of HBCU culture and community.
HBCUs have been pillars of opportunity since the 19th century, offering access to higher education when it was denied elsewhere. Today, they continue to produce:
A significant share of the nation’s Black doctors, lawyers, engineers, and educators
Cultural icons and thought leaders
Groundbreaking research and innovation
A vibrant, unmatched sense of community and belonging
These institutions are more than campuses—they are cultural engines that continue to shape America.
We envision a world where the legacy of HBCUs is widely understood, deeply respected, and continuously uplifted. As part of that mission, Historically Black Colleges provides accessible, in‑depth information on over 100 HBCUs, ensuring that students, families, and lifelong learners can explore the full breadth of these historic institutions. Our goal is to make it easier than ever to discover the richness, diversity, and impact of HBCUs—past, present, and future.
